animated sprite of ruby rust walking down

Ruby Rust is an 8-bit style action adventure game. It is inspired by Legend of Zelda for NES, particularly the fan-made "Zelda 1 Randomizer" version. It is currently in alpha development phase.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

When does the game come out?

Release Date: Undetermined.
Since I'm working on this solo project in my free time, I don't currently have a release date. However it is pretty far along, so it will be released EVENTUALLY.

What engine is being used to make Ruby Rust?

I use GameMaker. It only looks 8-bit. 😅

Why 8-bit style?

The first reason is pure nostalgia. I have a deep connection to the 8-bit and 16-bit era, specifically games of the NES and SNES. But there's something endearing about the NES era and I wanted to make a game that features the quirks and limits of the platform. The second reason is that those limitations mean I don't have to spend quite as much time on complex graphics and gameplay, which increases the likelyhood that the game will be released!

How much will it cost when it's finished?

I haven't decided the exact price, but less than $20.

How can I support this project in the meantime?

Concept Art

Early Artworks

I initially came up with Ruby Rust in early 2009, as a top-down Zelda-inspired Action Adventure game. I'm not sure what the first inspiration for the protagonist was, though I think her baggy pants and round hat was inspired by Relm from FF6. At some point she also had mouse/rat features, which may have been inspired from FF9's Freya.

The design came together very quickly, but wasn't solidified until she got her signature black-feathered, wide-brim hat.

Newer Designs

Her modern design has some tweaks. Her iconic red tailcoat will now be her starting clothing rather than a permanent part of her outfit.

I'm sure her design will continue to evolve into the future. I wonder what she'll look like in 2051!
